Cheri Mendoza Torres

If I were to live my life over again, I will not change this episode – experiencing God’s love in an intimate way, the love of friends which continue to pour to this day, and the opportunity to encourage others who are in the same situation makes it all worth it. God is good! – CHERI MENDOZA TORRES

Cheri Mendoza Torres’ life and career were in full swing when she was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer in 2014. She immediately underwent thyroid surgery under Dr. Daniel Alonzo and was also given radioactive iodine to complete the treatment. The combination of timely surgery and RAI provided cure for her papillary cancer, the most common type of cancer of the thyroid.

Unfortunately, two years after surgery and treatment, Cheri was again struck with a big blow. In 2016, she developed swollen and painful lymph nodes in her neck making it difficult for her to swallow. This then became a turning point for Cheri; she thought her thyroid cancer had recurred.

Because of her medical history, an MRI was requested to investigate the lymph nodes. Work up revealed a nasopharyngeal mass or a mass at the back of her nose. She took her MRI results to Dr. Daniel Alonzo, who then performed a biopsy. Their suspicions were confirmed. Cheri had Stage III Nasopharyngeal Cancer.

The news took another toll on Cheri’s body, but not on her spirit. Dr. Alonzo formed a team of doctors, which included a Medical Oncologist and a RadiaCon Oncologist. The team recommended 8 cycles of Immunotherapy and 35 cycles of targeted radiaCon therapy. She put her full trust in her team of doctors.

The treatment was very challenging but Cheri was determined to conquer her second cancer. Her treatments caused her to experience dry skin, dry mouth, difficulty and pain in swallowing, mouth sores, blisters on her neck, hair loss, and weakness. The effect on her sense of taste was one of the toughest things she had to overcome. Her devoted spouse and children supported her during all her trials and this inspired her to continue her battle.

At present, Cheri is a full-fledged cancer survivor. Thru diligent follow ups and surveillance, she is now cancer free.
